Hi, I have a question related to this paragraph

"Probably one of the most unfortunate aspects of humans is their ability and willingness to kill (11) ---- of their own species in wars.

The choices are:

A) every other
B) other
C) one another
D) others
E) each other

The correct answer is D apparently but I don't understand why that is the case. Couldn't C also be correct? Thanks in advance

Here, you can download it by clicking the purple box there.

You are right @johnnother other. C is just as correct as D. In my opinion E is also equally correct. Therefore the test appears to be poorly designed.

I don't agree. Followed by of their own species, only D works for me.

The correct answer is D. Let's focus on the relevant part "... their ability ... to kill ___________ of their own species".
If we look for other words that can fit in that blank, we might find, for example, "individuals" or "members". Thus, we see that those are similar to D (others).
The other answers (A. B. C and E) are simply wrong!

Well, I am more confused now. So the right answer is D?

Yes, D is the only correct answer.
I think @probus meant to say that those other answers can work if the sentence ended with them (did not include "of their own species in wars").
