Origin "to dump somone"

Since I have always wonderd why such a weird term is used to break up with another:

Where exactly does the term "to dump someone" origin from ?

I mean, it's not exactly like you can describe humans as "garbage to dump" in any way...

I can assure you that being dumped can certainly make you feel as if you've been treated like rubbish/trash/garbage.

Like I said... dumping refers to "throwing away".
I don't see how you can "throw someone away"...

How someone feels is a different thing, that depends on the individual.

It's often used when the break is one-sided. It may seem harsh, but there's clearly an element of rejection, just expressed strongly. To be honest, until you asked this question, I hadn't thought of it before- it just seemed a normal way of saying it.

It is. Don't you have harsh terms for this in your language? What are your common colloquialisms? (translated please)
In any case, it isn't always as bad as it sounds on first hearing.
"Simon dumped me yesterday. Oh well, I guess I can go to the beach with Peter on the weekend after all."
