"out the window" vs "out of the window", what's the difference?

Hi, teachers:

I'd love to know the differences between "out the window" and "out of the window".

My understanding is, if someone writes "he looked out the window", means the narrator(imaginary) was inside the house together with the protagonist("he"); And if someone writes "he looked out of the window" the narrater was outside the room, looking at the protagonist peeking from inside.

Am I right？

Not to me- they're the same, though the first is more colloquial and would not be used in formal language.
