The description about " outlet store " in this material says it's a permanent discount store. Is it correct? Are outlet stores always a discount store? I think some are, but some are not.

30)M:I think I need to buy a new bed...
W:Why don't you go to the department store? They sell a lot of nice furniture
M:Yeah, but it's pretty expensive there
W:Oh, I saw a flier about a new outlet store on 3rd Avenue....

In the UK, outlet shops/stores are, I believe, exclusively discount stores. They exist so that companies can sell off their excess stock at lower prices.

Excess or slightly imperfect items. Good enough to use but not good enough to be first quality.

The exact meaning of 'Oulet' as a shop, please...

Hi all,

This question has already been addressed in some other thread before, and a part of the answer says: '...An outlet is simply a name brand store that sells its old stock.' However, the dictionary gives the following definition: ' a shop that is one of many owned by a particular company and that sells the goods which the company has produced.'

Is this just a difference in usage in English varieties or something else? (My own interpretation is 'outlet' is the shop which directly sells the products under the company's control. Please correct me if I'm wrong.) Thanks.

I have merged the two threads to save cross-checking.

I, personally, am not sure these days just what 'outlet' in the name of a store is meant to tell us.

Thanks, and sorry for breaking the page rule. Hope some friends would tell me about their personal experiences in case they've ever come across such shops.
