outlet store

The description about " outlet store " in this material says it's a permanent discount store. Is it correct? Are outlet stores always a discount store? I think some are, but some are not.

In the UK, outlet shops/stores are, I believe, exclusively discount stores. They exist so that companies can sell off their excess stock at lower prices.

Excess or slightly imperfect items. Good enough to use but not good enough to be first quality.

Hi all,

This question has already been addressed in some other thread before, and a part of the answer says: '...An outlet is simply a name brand store that sells its old stock.' However, the dictionary gives the following definition: ' a shop that is one of many owned by a particular company and that sells the goods which the company has produced.'


Is this just a difference in usage in English varieties or something else? (My own interpretation is 'outlet' is the shop which directly sells the products under the company's control. Please correct me if I'm wrong.) Thanks.
