Do both verbs sound idiomatic? I mean I buy lottery tickets often to take part in it.

We like to participate/take part in lotteries.

They're both grammatical and make sense, but an idiomatic way to say this is "We like to play the lottery". (This works even if you mean multiple different lotteries.)

Yes. We use both.

It is used in BrE. It doesn't appear to have many takers in AmE.
