Can we use past perfect continuous in the following sentences?
a) I had worked hard, so I felt very tired.
b) He had shouted so loudly that he had a sore throat.

c) Before Sam joined the army, he'd been practicing for some time. Is the tense correct here?

d) He had always been thinking of being a pilot before he had the accident. Is the tense correct here or should we use past perfect simple?

Would it be wrong to put the first two sentences in a multiple choice exercise to choose between past perfect simple and past perfect continuous? Isn't past perfect simple more suitable than past perfect continuous?

Yes, don't do that.

Isn't past perfect simple more suitable than past perfect continuous?

What makes one form more suitable than another depends entirely on the use and meaning of the sentence.

What are you trying to do here? Write a test?
