[Grammar] past simple or past continuous?

I think my first sentence is correct, but could anyone assure me?

1.I didn't have to go to work yesterday, so I slept in late.
2. I didn't have to go to work yesterday, so I was sleeping in late.

Sentence 1 is correct.

I haven't heard to sleep in late before, so I can't say if it's wrong or not, but I'd use to stay up (late).

No - to stay up late means that you stay awake until late at night before going to bed.

To sleep in late means to have a lie-in, to stay in bed in the morning for a rest! Most people who work Monday to Friday, "sleep in late" at the weekends because they don't have to get up and go to work.

The original poster meant that he could stay in bed later than usual because he didn't have to go to work that day.

I found that 'sleep in' is a phrasal verb, and it means 'to sleep longer than you usually do'.

The second is also correct in the proper context.
"Sorry I missed your phone call yesterday. I didn't have to go to work, so I was sleeping in." - that is, I was sleeping when you phoned.
