Is "from the outside" idiomatic? I mean people who judged us by our looks and saw how different we were didn't understand how we could be friends because we were so different. Could "from the outside" be correct in other contexts?
Context: it's about me and my friend.

"People from the outside, not knowing us well, didn't understand how we could be friends."

Are you talking about other university students or just complete strangers? I wouldn't use "People from the outside" at all, though.
I'd say "People who didn't know us wouldn't think, to look at us, that we'd be best friends".

I mean people who didn't know us well. What's the meaning of "to look at us?

It's the same as saying "... if they looked at us, ...".
