Pesent Perfect or Past Simple?

Is it correct to say in British English:
"Last month I called a mechanic because my car broke down."
or the only correct option is:
"Last month I called a mechanic because my car had broken down."

Please note that a better title would have been My car broke down/my car had broken down.

In any case, your title is incorrect. The tenses are the simple past and the past perfect respectively.
