Hello.

Can I use the verb "pick up" in my sentence? "Tess is not my real name. I picked up the name of Julia Roberts' charachter in Oceans' 13."

I can only guess at your meaning. What are you trying to say?

[STRIKE]charachter[/STRIKE] character

Do you mean you decided you wanted to be called Tess after seeing Oceans' 13?

No, I didn't change my name. :)I am talking about using the name Tess as a username on a website.

How about I took the name from Julia Roberts' character?

Yes, I would understand your meaning in that context. "Picked up" is commonly used in your example meaning "used" or "obtained and used".
