[Vocabulary] Plants or flowers?

Hello,
one of my friends bought a few plants (with flowers) in pots for his mother. He said to me: "I've bought some flowers in pots." Is the word "flowers" all right in this context? Or should "plants" be used instead? What is the most natural way to tell someone that you have bought some pots with plants in them which have flowers? :-?

Maybe "flowering plants", or "flowering plants in pots".
