"In cricket a lot of players sledge other players."

"A lot of players get sledged in cricket."

"Tom sledges Tim."

Please check.

Given the right context, they can all work.
Put a comma after "cricket" in the first sentence.

It's a common practice in baseball but it has a different name, which eludes me at the moment.

It's definitely not confined to cricket. A tennis player was fined earlier in the year for saying something particularly unpleasant (while on court) to his opponent about his opponent's girlfriend.

This guy should have been banned not fined in this case. What a disaster!

"In cricket, a lot of players sledge other players."

That is correct.

Do you mean the practice of thus distracting opponents is strictly a BE thing, or the word sledging is strictly BE?

If it's the latter, I expect speakers of AusE will lay claim to it, as they started it in test matches between England and Australia.

;-)

I should have said that I've never heard this use of the word sledge in American English.
