One of my students wrote "Playing sports is healthy."
He meant "Playing sports is good for our health."

I think the sentence he wrote is fine. Do you agree?

Some sports are "played", e.g. football, tennis, rugby and bowling while others are "done", e.g: swimming, running and skiing. So it depends on how specific you want to be.

You can overcome the issue tedmc mentioned by using "Practising sport". (BrE generally uses "sport" as the uncountable collective term.)
