In some countries the average worker is obliged to retire at the age of 50, while in others people can work until they are 65 or 70. Until what age do you think people should be encouraged to remain in paid employment? Give reasons for your answer.
Over the last few years there have been massive debates and arguments about how long an employee should remain in paid employment. Although, retirement age differs from country to country but, generally ranges between fifties to seventies. However, increased ***life expectancy, better health conditions, technological advancement and an urge to reduce burden on the national economy has led many a countries to amend their retirement laws. Some end up in raising the retirement age as much as seventy while other set fifty as mandatory retirement age. But, forcing someone to retire from work solely on the basis of chronological age sounds illogical and unreasonable because age is not the true indicator of capability and competence. Therefore, a person should be allowed to work as long as he/she is able to or want to work.
First of all, number of grey hair on the head or wrinkles on the face never determines one’s true strength and capabilities. According to a research study, human brain has no mandatory retirement age and those who have sharpened there brain addresses through long years of work can perform more than adequately in their area of specialization even in their sixties. Thus, putting senior employees at menial tasks or forcing them to retire is height of foolishness. Instead retaining and valuing them is key to the success as it reduces the recruitment cost as well as social security cost.
On the contrary, letting employees to decide on their own how long to stay in workforce can block the employment opportunities for young people. Allowing senior employees to retire later means less jobs for young people. While asking them to retire gracefully at specific age means more jobs to fill for younger people. Moreover, youth is more inclined to change, novelty, creativity and innovation which are crucial to the existence of any business.
In the nutshell, age cannot measures competence. If lack of compulsory retirement age can create a large pool of unemployed youth then retaining the older employees for longer period can reduce burden on national economy. If experience of senior employees has its own significance on one hand than novel and brilliant ideas that young people offer are no less important. Thus, integrating the two generations as a team in the workforce can help achieve favorable results.
