I deliberately teach students not to do that. It's much better with a space, I think.

With "pm" I'll concede that it doesn't make any difference whether there's a space. However, with "am", there's a danger that it'll be read as the word "am" rather than the relevant abbreviation. When I was a child, we wrote "a.m." and "p.m." but the full stops have gradually vanished over the years.
