[Vocabulary] "Plenty of" or "too much"?

I think either "plenty of" or "too much" is correct for this sentence, right?

We had lots of people over to lunch yesterday, but there was ________ food for everybody.

If both of them are correct, which should I use to sound more natural?

I think that "too much" means that they prepare so much food that they can't eat it up. Moreover, you see, the word "but" in the sentence means that there are lots of people, and the food is much more than needed.
That's my opinion. Someone please check it.

Not necessarily- it could mean that there was enough for everyone despite the numbers. Both are possible- it depends on whether there was food left over or not and the context doesn't tell us that.

When I first saw this question, I also thought "plenty" immediately, but then realized that the person could be lamenting that they got too much food, despite there being so many people at the party.

I agree both are possible.
