In my exercise I've just stummbled upon the next task:

I've owned / owned about ten different camaras over the years.

According to the exam maximiser the right answer is "have owned", so I think the expression "over the years" talks about a long period of time up to the present moment, am I right?

1. I thought that they told about a specific period of time in the past, if it was right, I would use the past simple because I haven't know till now that "over the years" in this context means a long period of time conected to the present moment. In BrE it requires the present perfect tense.
2. It's an additional book to the course one, which consist only of exercises to make a learner be prepared at top.
