[Grammar] present simple/continuous with lately

What do you think about these sentences? I come across such sentences off and on.

1) Do you know how much more time Phil spends at home lately?

2) But lately I am seeing fewer of them.

Is it an informal way of speaking?

They are both informal ways of speaking. The first example is very common. The second is also common, but I would always express it as "...but lately I have been seeing fewer of them."
