problem with ing form

Please consider the below sentence.

"Every one is capable of connecting to the internet and making their contribution to the rest of the world"

above sentence may not hold a proper meaning but I have an issue with grammar used in the sentence. Why it has to be making instead of make

It is about parallelism -- same structure in both phrases.

It could be:

Everyone can connect to the Internet and make...

Why it has to be making instead of make

Capable of- we use a gerund after a preposition, and so we use gerunds for both connecting and making.
