1- Both are correct. I think principal is more technical here.
2- well, it shoud be the explanation of something, right? Then phenomena.
3- A model is usually used to predict something in the future or describe a trend which leads to something in the future (I say it as an IE graduate). So prognostications is correct. Diagnosis is what a physician says about one's illness, when he says that it is a cancer. His diagnosis is cancer.
4- Yes you can.

I edit no. 3.

prognosis: to describe the likely outcome of an illness.

"Prognosis" may be a judgement about what's going to happen in the future.

So is it prognostications or prognosis?

I doubt if "prognosis" be applicable in other scientific fields.
There is a "prognostics" which is an engineering topic.
prognostications is correct.

Prognosis would be used like "The preisdent came up with a promissing prognosis for the national economy."?

In such sentences it is figuratively used. We also use "recover" for economy.

For your text it is not suitable.
