After a word in the dictionary, there is the way to pronounce it. If there are two ways to pronounce a word, which is the preferred way ? I think the first listed is the preferred, but my wife says they are equal. Help please...

I suppose that the first way is BrE and the second is AmE.

If two versions are given that are not British or American versions, then I would agree with your wife- the dictionary is probably just listing different versions. If the dictionary preferred one form, they could say so.
