Hi

What does "pull a slick one" mean?

He suspected that the guy might actually be some sort of military archives inspector trying to pull a slick one.

A sleazy character (one who is sly, slimy, and greasy) might try to 'pull a fast/quick one'. I think the writer has - perhaps unconsciously - coined a new 'portmanteau' word out of sleasy and quick. I've never met 'pull a slick one'.

To 'pull a quick/fast one' is to fool someone - to stop them noticing what you're doing.
