Hello,

Can anybody explain to me what the words rangey and gauche distinction mean in the text below?

She was taller than he, her dark hair overtopping his silvering locks by quite a head, a shade big-boned and ‘rangey’ but with a sort of gauche distinction. Her tone, as she looked down at him in shrewd concern, had carried a composedly protective, and as it were too understanding, reproof.

John Metcalf, The Firing-chamber, 193?

Thanks a lot.

My guess is that rangey means "wild, uncivilized". Gauche means "uncouth, unrefined, ill-mannered".
