It's OK but in AmE you would frequently hear "entertain friends etc." instead.

No, I don't think so."receive" may be used in some other context as
"Did you receive your friends at the party?"
In your sentence, "invite" looks suitable
 
"Recieve" is fine but in colloquial English we would very often say "to have friends for dinner".
