[Grammar] Reported Speech

Hi, I am trying to change the following sentence to reported speech but I don't think my sentence is correct. Can anyone help me?

Direct Speech: The young man said to him, “Take your son with you when you leave.”
Reported Speech: The young man said to him took his son with you when you left.

Are there sentences that can't go back a tense and be reported speech?

It's a sentence that my native English speaking friend gave me to do with lots of other sentences.

For such sentences, you can use introductory verbs. In this case, you coud say "The young man suggested/ordered him to take his son with him when he left".

"The young man ordered him to take his son with him when he left". - Correct, if the young man really did issue an order.
"The young man suggested him to take his son with him when he left". Incorrect

"The young man suggested (that) he take his son with him when he left". Correct.

Can I ask just one more question. Is this some kind of sentence that is an exception to the rules of going back a tense or do I need the infinitive because it comes after "him" the object pronoun?

If you are asking about the verb 'take' used in "The young man suggested (that) he take his son with him when he left.", it's called "the subjunctive".

Well, not really. It depends on the verb you wish to use. "suggest somebody to do something" is not grammatical, but "tell/order somebody to do something" is.
