2. Who Is an Author? (Source: https://www.icmje.org/icmje-recommendations.pdf)
The ICMJE recommends that authorship be based on the following 4 criteria:
1. Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work; AND
2. Drafting the work or reviewing it critically for important intellectual content; AND
3. Final approval of the version to be published; AND
4. Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.

Many research papers have several authors. For example, this one has 12 authors. In the 'Contributions' section, it says: "G.V. was accountable for all aspects of the work thereby ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work were appropriately investigated and resolved. S.D.R., C.S.C., and M.A. helped with the analysis and interpretation of the data. A.N., T.S., D.D.I., L.P., and V.B. substantially contributed to the conception and design, acquisition of the data, and analysis and interpretation of the data. A.R.D.G. contributed to the drafting of the article or review it critically for important intellectual content. M.O. and S.R. gave substantial contributions to the conception and design and approved the final version to be published. The authors read and approved the final manuscript.". There is an error there, but it is clear that that is this particular author's contribution to the research.

What do they mean by 'review [the work] critically for important intellectual content'?

By the way, here they use the term 'revise': "Drafting the work or revising it critically for important intellectual content". And here they have this: " Write drafts and/or revisions of the document providing critical important “intellectual content”. Lastly, here it is as follows: "Making contributions or making critical revisions adding or clarifying important intellectual content".
