Dear teachers,

The following is a definition I found in my dictionary:

a reception held by a person of distinction on rising from bed

My question is: Does "rising from bed" means early in the morning?

Looking forward to hearing from you.
Thank you in advance.

My question is: Does "rising from bed" mean[STRIKE]s[/STRIKE] early in the morning?

It would certainly seem so. However, be aware that WordReference (levee - WordReference.com Dictionary of English) gives this as a secondary meaning.

Other Dictionaries, such as the Compact Oxford English Dictionary (levee: definition of levee in Oxford dictionary (British & World English)) cite it as being archaic.

If you look at the Online Etymology Dictionary (Online Etymology Dictionary), you will see why it is held in the morning.

It may have been 'a levée'. This sort of reception went out with Louis XIV, and the only similar word (with the same root) an English student may meet in the 21st century is levee, which means something entirely different.

It doesn't (or didn't) necessarily mean early in the morning. "On rising from bed" simply means "when he/she got out of bed after sleeping". For all we know, the person holding such a reception might not have got up until 4pm!
