I did not say thank you to him in person, but I wrote him a thank you note.

Can I express the same thing using:
I did not say thank you to him in person but wrote/write him a thank you note.

Which one is correct?
 
I would rephrase that as: "I did not thank him in person, but I wrote him a thank-you note."
