I'm wondering whether "up" means over in this context?

Liverpool 3-0 Bournemouth

A glancing header from Alexis Mac Allister is scooped up by Kepa Arrizabalaga. (From BBC live commentary)

I mean how does "up" work there? Is it a phrasal verb?

You ever seen someone pick a ball up from the ground? The general direction of the picking is "up."

Same with "scooping."

Arrizabalaga is a goalkeeper so is the only player on his team who's allowed to touch the ball with his hands (while the ball is in play). He picked up the ball using a scooping motion.
