Hello.

Do these sentences sound natural? It is a real life situation. Two teenagers decided to fix their friend's car after a car accident. The were responsible for it.

1. "We decided to share the part of the cost." I think "the" should be removed.

2. "We decided to share the expances."

3. "We decided to share some of the cost." "Costs" is wrong. I didn't write it.

I agree with you.

You could say:

We decided to share the cost. (Each paid part of it.)

1. "We decided to share the part of the cost." I think "the" should be removed. You're right.

2. "We decided to share the expances." OK except for a misspelling.

3. "We decided to share some of the cost." "Costs" is wrong. You're right.
Please correct the misspelling in your thread title, too.

That would only be appropriate if they were sharing the whole cost. Both sentences one and three explicitly state that their joint contribution will be less than the whole cost. If that isn't Rachel's intention then the sentences need to be re-written.

I agree about "costs" but a lot of colloquial BrE speakers will say it.

Let's say that the cost was $1000 but they decided to split it 50/50.

The singular or the plural work equally well to my American ears.

If I say "Our medical insurance doesn't cover all the costs" using "costs" wouldn't be wrong here, would it?

Not to me. You would have to have explained what costs you're talking about in a previous sentence.

Re: Share the cost/expances

Not if there was more than one charge, for example, ambulance plus surgery plus medicines, etc, and the insurance did not cover all of them.

Yes, exactly. "It doesn't cover all of these" meaning "It doesn't cover all the costs."

Would "part of the costs" also work? "We decided to share part of the costs."

Yes, but I'd be more likely to use the singular "cost" there. You could say some of the costs, which suggests we'd share the cost of some items but not others.

I'd use "all of the costs" or "the whole cost".
