She ____________ in the washing when it began to rain.

It took him a long time to _______________ in what she was saying.

We are planning to _______________ in the castle when we see the sights of the city.

What word best fits the blank?

I firstly thought believe but I am not sure.

Please help.

Thank you in advance.

'Believe' does not work in any of them. Concentrate on #1. If she has clothes on the line in the garden and it begins to rain, is she going to leave the washing on the line to get wet again or ....?

Do you not think "believe" works in #2? I can't think of an alternative.

Fish ........... in oxygen through their gills.
:-D

Oops, Sorry. 'Believe' is just about possible, though I think it would be far more likely without the 'in'. The alternative is the verb that works in all three.

Ah, sorry! I was being particularly dim and didn't realise we were looking for one verb which fits all three. I had come up with a separate answer for each one.

What about 'drop' then?

Have you heard that people "drop in their clothes when it starts to rain?" Why would they do that?

Here is a clue - the verb you need has actually already been used in one of the three sentences.

Then, is it 'take(s)'?

Yes, it is. So, why don't you post the three sentences with the correct word inserted and tell us if you understand why it's the correct answer.
