Hello !

Would you please explain to me, if the conjuction "while" needed in the sentence, and why ?:

"She spoke on the phone (while) baking the pie"

Hello!

Would you please explain to me no comma here if the conjuction "while" is needed in the sentence no comma here and why? no colon here

"She spoke on the phone (while) baking the pie."

Welcome to the forum. :hi:

Please note my corrections above. Don't leave a space before a full stop, comma, question mark or exclamation mark.

If you omit "while", you get "She spoke on the phone baking the pie" which means that the phone was baking a pie!

I would like to clarify if we change the order do we also need the conjuction "while"?

"While baking the pie she spoke on the phone"

Thanks.

May I correct the mistakes in my post now?

No, please don't edit a post after it has received responses. Occasionally, we will specifically ask you to edit a post but if we don't ask you, please don't.

I would like to clarify whether, if we change the order, [STRIKE]do[/STRIKE] we also need the conjunction "while".

"While baking the pie, she spoke on the phone."

Note my corrections above.

Yes, in that sentence, you still need "While".

"While baking the pie she spoke on the phone"

I think you can drop the "while" if the two actions happen simultaneously. Here, the person is waiting for the pie to bake, while speaking on the phone.

But how many speakers would actually say Baking a pie, she spoke on the phone?

What about:

Waiting for the pie to bake, she spoke on the phone?

As long as the two are linked. But, still, we're not in natural language territory IMO.

Thanks for answers.

While the pie was baking still sounds better to me.
