‘You don’t recognise me because I let my grey come in and now I have a ponytail.’ He had brought his snout closer.

Cris would have preferred that he didn’t make such direct mention of the ponytail; she was enough of an adult – and alone, not getting any younger – to know she could stand the sight of the ponytail, but not talking about it. Quique wasn’t intimidated by Cris’s sideways glances, the deliberate nature of some of her absent and distracted moments.

This is from 'Conditions for the Revolution' a short story by Pola Oloixarac. What is the meaning of the sentence/fragments marked in red?

she was enough of an adult
she was sufficiently mature..
Take a look at entry #1.2 for "adult" as an adjective in the following link.
https://www.lexico.com/definition/adult

– and alone,
She was on her own (unattached?)

not getting any younger –
She was past her youth.

to realize

she could stand the sight of the ponytail,
she could tolerate looking at a ponytail

but not talking about it.
but she could not stand/bear talking about it (the ponytail)

I only understand the last part. She wasn't bothered by the ponytail, but she didn't want to talk about it.

(Cross posted.)

You do know, don't you, that it is not normal to refer to a person's face as a snout?
