the king went home sad
Is the adjective "sad" the subject complement or an adverbial in the above clause?

In "The king went home sad," "sad" does have the force of a subject complement. The sentence means:

The king was sad when he went home.

Similar sentences: "Kim married young"; "Jesse died poor"; "Superman flies unaided."
