The noun after "a series of" is usually in the plural form. But should I use "is" or "are" when using "a series of..." as the subject? :?:

Is.

'A series of accidents at that junction is worrying local residents.'

Rover

Is there any case in which "are" is used? For example, there ___ a series of strange objects in his suitcase.

That's an unnatural usage. We wouldn't refer to a selection or variety of strange objects in a case as a "series".
