showing or being shown

Hi guys,

Can we say "songs are playing in the gym or the film is showing on television" is it right?

For the first part, yes. For the second part, I would use "is being shown".

So why if we can say that songs are playing=songs are being played, so why can't we say, movie is showing instead of movie is being shown.
