sing for us? or sing to us?

Dear all,

If you say "The singer sang us Imagine" in another way, do you say,

"The singer sang Imagine to us" or "The singer sang Imagine for us"?

Also, do you say,

"My grandfather used to read fairy tales to me"

or

"My grandfather used to read fairy tales for me" ?

You could say both. If someone sings to you, they direct the song directly at you, while singing for you is providing a musical service IMO.
 
Your grandfather would read to you.
