[Grammar] Sink in the ground

I doubt about the preposition "in" in this sentence: "HE presses one of the stones at the edge of the cliff with his foot to make it sink in the ground". May be, I should change the verb "sink"...
 
"Into" the ground.

The fact that it is at the "edge of the cliff" would suggest to me perhaps, "to make it drop/fall/tumble to the ground below". But the word "presses" seems unusual to me also.

Well, it is a kind of a secret lock (it is in a fairy tale), which can be opened by pressing different stones;-)
