But, if parsing and correcting are of so great practical importance as our first mention of them suggests, it may be well to be more explicit here concerning them.

This sentence is taken from the Grammar of English Grammars, by Gould Brown. The 'so' is a typo, isn't it? Shouldn't it have been 'such'?

What do native English speakers think of this book? Could you tell me?

I wouldn't say that 'so' and 'such' were interchangeable, although you could use either.
'So' modifies 'great', while 'such' would modify 'importance'.
That would make 'so' an adverb, and 'such' an adjective (or pronoun maybe)
In any case, you can't write, "of so importance", but you can write "of such importance".

"of a practical importance so great"
"of great practical importance such as this"
"of great practical importance"

Note in the following example, that the word order is different.
"I wouldn't question such a great man."
"I wouldn't question so great a man."
