Explain please the use of past perfect, would the meaning be the same if one used past simple, like
"I went afterwards"? What is the nuance in using past perfect here?
 
The past perfect is for sequencing an action prior to another, especially as a narrative device to create background context.

No, using the past simple wouldn't be the same, of course. The past simple doesn't do what the past perfect does.
