There are ten mistakes in the following passage. Find and correct them.

We all know that cycling is a greatly exercise. A doctor tells me people who lives the longest are dancers and cyclists. Maybe it is because the combination of fresh air, smooth movement and exercise. Whether you ride a bicycle, you don’t use petrol. So they are not producing carbon dioxide and not cause air pollution. Just see how cars have been taken over our cities. They often run at high speeds, what may put our lives in danger. And there were traffic jams, too. Our cities will be better places if we replace cars with bicycle.
Answer keys:
1.greatly→great;
2.lives→live;
3.because→because of;
4.Whether→If/When;
5.cause→causing;
6.been (canceled);
7.speeds→speed;
8.what→which;
9.were→are;
10.bicycle→bicycles

I have two questions.
1. The use of "they" in the following sentence looks odd to me:
So they are not producing carbon dioxide and not causing air pollution.
I understand the pronoun “they” refers to bicycles but I don’t think it goes well with the singular form of noun “bicycle” in the previous sentence: When you ride a bicycle, you don’t use petrol.
Maybe it's better to say: So you are not producing carbon dioxide and not causing air pollution.
What do you say?

2. I don't understand why "speeds" in "They often run at high speeds" should be changed to the singular form "speed". Could you enlighten me?

1. I agree.
2. A case can be made for both the singular and and plural forms.

So they are not producing carbon dioxide and do not cause air pollution.

The statement is not factually correct. It is the other components from a vehicle's exhaust fumes that cause pollution - carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, formaldehyde, benzene and soot. Carbon dioxide merely causes global warming.

I don't see how dancers get fresh air.

I have two more questions.
a. To correct the misuse of “whether” in “Whether you ride a bicycle, you don’t use petrol”, “whenever” is also possible. Do you agree?

b. Strictly speaking, the use of the pronoun “they” in “So they are not producing carbon dioxide and not cause air pollution” is also a mistake. Do you think so?

Hi, 5jj. In #2, you said "A case can be made for both the singular and and plural forms." Do you mean both "at high speed" and "at high speeds" are correct in the context in the OP?

Yes, that's what 5jj said.

a. Yes, both "Whenever" and "When" are possible replacements for the incorrect "Whether".
b. I think "they" is supposed to refer back to "dancers and cyclists".

I know it's only supposed to be an exercise but claiming that dancers don't produce pollution and always get fresh air is frankly nonsensical.

I used to be a regular participant in evening street dancing in Jinzhou in 2002. I still have my fan!
