"In the resistance we encounter a regular feature of Islamic wars: the professional soldier (askar) is devalued with respect to the mujahedin, who is a volunteer and a believer, but also with respect to the warrior and the merchant and artisan." Source: The American War in Afghanistan by Carter Malkasian
What is the difference between "soldier" and "warrior" in this context? The first one is professional fighter, the second one a volunteer? If so, what is the difference between the warrior and the mujahedin?

"Warrior" is, I think, the more general term. That is, you can be a warrior without being a soldier. The term "mujahidin" is, I think, Arabic and is a warrior with religious overtones. I wouldn't put too fine a point on it in any case.

Warrior can also be used to describe somone who fights bravely and hard.
