Spelling of Foreign Words

Hi, everybody!
I'm very glad for having the opportunity to discuss the English language here.
Since I have to write some texts about Brazilian literature, I'd like to know what is the best way of highlight foreing words (in this case, Portuguese words) in my text, if "this way", this way or this way.
Another question: let's suppose a word like "crônica". Could I spell without the accent - "cronica"?

I usually do it "this way". Don't leave out the accents.

Italics are usually used for foreign words.

Special characters with accents can be used, but don't be surprised if English speakers don't pay a lot of attention to them.

I've found that "atencao" gets Brazilian's attention just as well as "atenção."

And the longer a borrowing has been in regular use, the less necessary the diacritics are. In three editions of the same dictionary (the Concise Oxford) the same word is presented three ways: 'rôle' in the oldest, then 'role', then 'role'.
