[Grammar] Spend some time to or on ?

Hi teachers,

It's summer vacation. Jan, Sue and Ann will go to the beach near our school after they have finished the afternoon classes.
They asked me on the phone if I wanted to go to the beach with them, but I said no.
I told them that I want to spend some time to read a book.

Now I have a question about the word Spend, should I use on or to after Spend?


Please help me, teachers.

Are there any mistakes in the following sentences?

1. I told them that I wanted to spend some time reading a book.
2. I told them that 'I want to spend some time reading a book.'

In that context, the past tense is better.
