Sentence 1 is OK although saying "my spirits were low" is rather old-fashioned.1) I didn't feel like going out because my spirits were low.
2) He was so excited because his spirits were high.
Please check my sentences.
Hence my use of the word "tautologous" in post #2.Sentence two is almost like saying he was excited because he was excited.
