What does "spot the run" mean?

GOAL!!! Newcastle 3-3 Man City (Silva, 64)
THIS IS SILLY!! They looked rattled, down and out. In a blink of an eye they are level!!

De Bruyne. Deary me. What an assist. He spots the run and Silva from right to left and he gets in behind. Pope comes out but Silva has the awareness to clip a finish beyond the goalkeeper.

The verb spots means 'sees'. Do you know what a run is in football?

No, but hopefully somebody will explain that.
I think that question was aimed at the OP. We're trying to get users to do their own research before we dish out the answers.

He spots the run and Silva from right to left and he gets in behind.

That's a typo, which is probably contributing to the OP's lack of understanding.
