What do you think which of the following words convey the meaning of the underlined word?
1. Extraordinary, unusual ...
2. surprising, astonishing
"In the year 1810, a case of living inhumation happened in France, attended with circumstances which go far to warrant the assertion that truth is, indeed, stranger than fiction."

And what about "fiction"? Do you think it is about literature or just something that has been fabricated? http://poestories.com/read/premature

Any of those adjectives can be used to apply to strange or stranger (as an adjective). Also, you don't need to ask about definitions here. (There is dictionary.com, merriam-webster.com and other online dictionaries.) However, "fiction" applies to literature as well as real life (as something that is made up, fabricated, not true.)
