Hello everyone,

I'd like to ask about the meaning of "stroke into a wave" in the surfing context.
When you say that a surfer stroked into a wave, what does it mean?

So now that you’re out there and have stroked into a wave, we’ll move onto Step Two: the pop up.

Is
"stroking into a wave", figuratively speaking, like climbing a mountain?
If not, what does it mean?

3 stroke something + adv./prep. to move something somewhere with a gentle movement

If I chose the correct meaning from the dictionary, I'm not sure how it applies to the phrase "stroke into a wave."

Thank you.

Consider this preceding text: [These muscles] act together to pull our arms through the water taking us out to the line up, and once we’re there, into waves. Swimming is done by strokes — arm movements. It seems clear that stroke means "swim" in this contest.
