Is it correct to say I am a student at university (I mean is it gramatically correct, would I be understood) or I can only say I am a university student? Thank you

In AmE, “I am a university student” is correct.

Welcome to the forum, rf1997.

Is it correct to say "I am a student at university" (I mean is it grammatically correct? Would I be understood?) Yes, it is and yes you would.

or [STRIKE]I[/STRIKE] can I only say "I am a university student?" That's more natural.
The first version would be more natural if you specified the university:

"I'm a student at Brussels University".

In Canada, "I am a university student" is much more common, but the other version would be easily understood. It wouldn't raise an eyebrow.

See also the answers you have received here.

It's not wrong, but it's not as good as the alternative unless you're giving the name.

The phrase "at university" is far more common in Commonwealth English (e.g., "When I was at university, ...") than it is in American English. As an American, I find it unnatural. Americans would most likely say "When I was in college, ...".

In American English, "I am a university student" is correct, but we're more likely to say "I am a college student."

Americans also tend not to use the shortened form "uni", which is common in Commonwealth English, but there seems to be an uptick in its use by Americans recently, perhaps due to exposure to other dialects of English.

Hey, guys! I think it's right, and that's why - I'm a university student, and that's why - I'm a university student.
