Are they equivalent or is there any difference between registration and sign up when using them in the context of a website database?

Yes, they are synonymous. Sign-up, as a noun, is hyphenated.

It is used as a noun- it could be a recent coinage because of signing up on the internet, but I do see it there often enough.

I have seen sign-up as a noun many times, but I was doubting since there is no such a word in any English dictionary.
It's listed as a noun in dictionaries 1, 3 and 4 here, Pete.

It won't be long before the hyphen disappears.

I've seen "signup" plenty of times. It's no longer underlined by my spellchecker.

Thought so.

I've seen it used without the hyphen in newspapers in recent weeks- it's become a topic in the election for leadership of a political party.
